We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the Third Annual International Workshop on Experimental Economics and Finance at Xiamen University. We welcome submissions incorporating or analyzing controlled experiments using human subjects in studies of decision theory, economics, finance, game theory, management science, marketing, or political science. The conference theme is Behavioral Game Theory and we particularly encourage submissions related to this topic.

PAPER SUBMISSION AND REGISTRATION

Researchers who would like to present their work at the conference are invited to submit a short abstract (not exceeding 250 words, including title and co-authors) to experiment2012wise(at)gmail.com. Please note that all submissions and presentations will be in English. The submission deadline is October 15, 2012. Decisions of acceptance will be announced by October 31, 2012.

The registration fee is 600 RMB for those whose primary affiliation is with a domestic Chinese institution, and 150 USD for international participants. This registration fee will be waived for students (both domestic and international). The registration deadline is November 15, 2012. Note if you plan to attend but not present, please send an e-mail indicating your intention to experiment2012wise(at)gmail.com prior to the registration deadline.

BEST PAPER AWARD AND SPECIAL ISSUE OF PACIFIC ECONOMIC REVIEW

The WISE Outstanding Experimental Economics or Finance Paper Award will be given to the most outstanding paper presented at this conference by a researcher who will have not received his or her Ph.D. prior to 2008. If you are eligible and wish to be considered for this award, please submit a PDF copy of the completed paper you will present in an e-mail indicating your interest to exp2012wise by November 30, 2012.

We are also pleased to announce that The Pacific Economic Revue (PER) will publish a special issue consisting of papers presented at this year’s conference. The PER has a strong tradition of publishing experimental papers which garner wide visibility and citation. Charles Noussair and Jason Shachat will co-edit the special issue. All submissions for the special issue will be subject to peer review and the usual publication standards of the journal.

The annual International Workshop on Experimental Economics and Finance is one component of the effort by WISE to establish a leading research center in Experimental Economics and Finance. In the fall of 2010, the Finance and Economics Experimental Lab (FEEL) at WISE commenced operations; http://www.wise.xmu.edu.cn/feel. This state of the art facility is part of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory in Econometrics awarded to WISE in 2010. This is the first Ministry Key Lab established in the social sciences.

Xiamen is located in Southeast China and has convenient direct flights to many major cities in Asia. It is famous for its resort like atmosphere and has a reputation as the cleanest and most livable Chinese city. Interesting places near Xiamen include the UNESCO World Heritage Hakka Earth Buildings, Gulangyu (Piano Island) and Wuyi Mountain.

Established in 2005, the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) is a recent effort of the Ministry of Education of China and Xiamen University to build a first class research institute and facilitate domestic and international research and academic exchanges. ESA-announce Senior Positions at the University of Birmingham, UK

Dear all,

The Department of Economics at the University of Birmingham is seeking to fill two positions at the Full Professor/Reader level. The area will be “any field” but we hope and expect that at least one of the two positions will be filled by an experimental/behavioural economist. This is part of an expansion and the university has demonstrated commitment to
experimental/behavioural research by creating a state-of-the-art laboratory, initial experimental seed money and commitment to further hires at the junior level. The departmental atmosphere is very collegial and Birmingham is a great place to live. Salaries are internationally competitive.

ESA-announce IFREE small grants program deadline Aug 15

Hi all,

A few years ago, the International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics (IFREE) initiated a small grants program. The program provides up to $10,000 in support for research that uses experimental methods. The grants program is open to anyone affiliated with a research institution. Proposals from researchers located in the US or outside the US are welcome.

There are two review cycles per year, with deadlines on Aug 15 (coming soon) and Feb 15.

ESA-announce Junior Positions at the University of Birmingham, UK

Dear all,

The University of Birmingham is offering attractive entry level positions for very promising early carrier researchers. These so called “Birmingham Fellows” are recruited in all areas. One of the priority areas this year is “Markets and Behaviour in a Global Economy.” Please see http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/excellence/fellows/index.aspx for details.

These are lectureships (permanent positions) but with a much reduced teaching load and a guarantee that fellows would not have to do any administration for 5 years. This frees up a lot more time for research than is normal in UK universities. The expectation is that after the 5 years fellows will be promoted to senior lecturer but can be promoted before then. The competition for these fellowships is very tough and in order to be considered applicants have to have at least one publication in a high-quality (3*) journal.

An attractive feature of joining the University of Birmingham is the access to state-of-the-art resources, with MRI, fMRI, EEG, infant EEG, multiple TMS platforms, and multiple facilities for eye tracking and kinematic analysis (via collaborations with Psychology) as well as the Birmingham Experimental Economics Laboratory (BEEL).

11th Annual International Conference on Politics & International Affairs, 17-20 June 2013, Athens, Greece

    The Politics & International Affairs Research Unit of theAthens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) will hold its 11th Annual International Conference on Politics & International Affairs, 17-20 June 2013, Athens, Greece. For further details (including previous programs), please go to the conference website: www.atiner.gr/politics.htm. The registration fee is €300 (euro), covering access to all sessions, two lunches, coffee breaks and conference material. Special arrangements will be made with a local luxury hotel for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate. In addition, a number of special events will be organized: A Greek night of entertainment with dinner, a special one-day cruise in the Greek islands, an archaeological tour of Athens and a one-day visit to Delphi.

    The aim of the conference is to bring together academics, researchers, students and professionals in private and public organizations and governments of Politics and International Affairs and other related disciplines. You may participate as panel organizer, presenter of one paper, chair a session or observer.

    If you think that you can contribute, please submit a 300-word abstract by 19 November 2012, by email, atiner@atiner.gr to: Dr. Ioannis Stivachtis, Head, Politics & International Affairs Research Unit, ATINER and Director, International Studies Program Virginia Tech – Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, USA. Please include: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Current Position, Institutional Affiliation, an email address and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. Please use the abstract submitting form available at http://www.atiner.gr/2013/FORM-POL.doc.

    Announcement of the decision is made within 4 weeks after submission, which includes information on registration deadlines and paper submission requirements. If you want to participate without presenting a paper, i.e. organize a mini conference or a panel (session), chair a session, evaluate papers to be included in the conference proceedings or books, contribute to the editing of a book, or any other contribution, please send an email to Dr. Gregory T. Papanikos (gtp@atiner.gr), President, ATINER.

    The Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) was established in 1995 as an independent academic association with the mission to become a forum, where academics and researchers – from all over the world – could meet in Athens and exchange ideas on their research and discuss the future developments of their discipline. Since 1995, ATINER has organized about 200 international conferences and events. It has also published about 150 books. Academically, the Institute consists of four research divisions and twenty research units. Each research unit organizes at least an annual conference and undertakes various small and large research projects. Academics and researchers are more than welcome to become members and contribute to ATINER’s objectives. Members can undertake a number of academic activities.
