ESA-announce behavioral lab in Nairobi

Posted on 2013/01/11. Filed under: 綜合 |

Dear colleagues,

I’d like to make you aware of the possibility of conducting laboratory
studies at the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics in Nairobi,
Kenya. The Busara Center is a state-of-the-art facility for
experimental studies in behavioral economics and other social
sciences, located in Nairobi. The core of Busara is a pool of 3000
participants from the Nairobi slums, combined with a cluster of 20
networked computers with which researchers can investigate economic
behavior and preferences. A central feature of the computer setup is
that all computers have touchscreen monitors; together with specially
developed paradigms, this allows for the participation of not only
computer-illiterate, but entirely illiterate populations. Respondents
are recruited via phonecall or text message, and paid through Kenya’s
mobile money system, MPesa. In addition, Busara offers individual
survey rooms for private interviews, facilities for saliva and blood
sampling, a waiting room, and office space for visiting researchers. A
mobile lab consisting of 20 touchscreen laptop computers, which will
allow conducting interactive computerized studies in rural settings,
is currently being developed. Busara is proud to be hosted and
supported by Innovations for Poverty Action Kenya (IPA-K).
Busara is open to researchers from universities and other institutions
around the world. Further information can be found at, and in a descriptive paper available at If you are
interested in conducting a study at Busara, please get in touch with
Johannes Haushofer (joha).

Best regards, and apologies for any cross-postings.
Johannes Haushofer
