Special Issue: Turn Swords to Scalpels – Lessons learned from the Defense Domain for Medical and Healthcare Simulation

For several decades, the defense domain has been pioneering modeling and simulation (M&S) to provide solution for procurement, acquisition, training, education, testing, and other application categories. Military simulation systems were the first ones to be federated into simulation solutions that literally spanned the globe. The first simulation interoperability standards were focused on defense applications.

Today, the market and its requirements changed. It is predicted in several economic studies that the health care domain is going to surpass the defense domain as the leading M&S market in the foreseeable future. Many M&S providers are therefore reorienting themselves to target this new domain of medical and healthcare simulation. The underlying academic challenge is to answer the question: How can we translate the knowledge we gained by applying M&S in the defense domain to the healthcare domain? Can we mediate our experience and lessons learned, or to we have to start from scratch in this new domain? An example how to apply lessons learned is given by A. Tolk, S.Y. Diallo, and J.J. Padilla: “Interoperability Standards for Medical Simulation Systems,” MODSIM World 2011 Conference and Expo, Virginia Beach, VA, October 2011, NASA/CP-2012-217326, pp. 137-142.

This special issue looks for theoretic foundations as well as practical applications of experience, knowledge, and methods that were gained or developed in the defense domain that were applicable to the benefit of the new application domain of medical and healthcare simulation.
