Behavior and Motivations for Giving and Volunteering:

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning in the 2014-15 academic year, with expertise in both research and teaching relevant to the behavior and motivations for giving and volunteering. Experimentalists with experience in conducting laboratory or field experiments to investigate the giving of money, the volunteering of time, or other prosocial behavior are preferred.

Candidates must have strong disciplinary training combined with a willingness to engage with students and scholars from multiple disciplines sharing the goal of understanding philanthropic behavior. Research of the successful candidate will be in either a) social scientific research about behavior and motives to give or volunteer, or b) social scientific research about behavior and motives to give or volunteer as they differ within or across cultures. Successful candidates must also demonstrate evidence of high quality teaching. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. courses in the social science of philanthropic behavior.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or ABD (e.g., in Economics, Management Science, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health or Sociology). Applicants from other disciplines whose research fits our search objectives are also encouraged to apply.

The new IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which builds on the Center on Philanthropy’s 25-year history, values a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding philanthropy, with faculty appointees trained in the humanities, social sciences and other fields. Located on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus, it offers Ph.D., masters, and undergraduate degrees. The School’s research environment includes internal grants to catalyze new research, the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, The Fund Raising School, the Philanthropy Panel Study on Giving and Volunteering, the Payton Philanthropic Studies Library, the Ruth Lilly Archives, and the Center for Service and Learning.
