The Association for Public Economics (APET), in collaboration with New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and the Journal of Public Economic Theory (JPET), will commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the Bergstrom, Blume and Varian paper on voluntary provision of public goods, one of the most celebrated papers in public economic theory, and Andreoni’s paper on free-riding in public good experiments, a forerunner of behavioral public economics with a special issue of the JPET and an accompanying workshop at NYUAD.

This note is to invite you to submit a paper to the special issue. The special issue will focus on game-theoretic and experimental approaches to public economics, the lines of research to which the four abovementioned authors have contributed so much. As time is short, feel free to submit a preliminary draft to the special issue at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1467-9779 by October 1st, 2017. Please make sure that your paper is submitted to the special issue and that, if it is preliminary, that you indicate this on the frontpage. Final versions will be due after the workshop.

Unless it is otherwise noted by the authors, all submitted papers will be considered for presentation at the NYUAD workshop. The workshop will begin with a welcome reception on December 14th, 2017 and conclude on December 17th with a social day. Andreoni, Bergstrom, Blume, and Varian have confirmed their attendance the workshop along with other prominent scholars in the field. For presenters of papers selected for the workshop, NYUAD will cover up to 3 nights of hotel accommodation in Abu Dhabi and between $300 and $500 in travel costs (depending on the distance from Abu Dhabi). There will be a registration fee for the workshop of about $300 to cover meals and social events that, for egalitarian reasons, we will be asking all attendees to pay.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions. All best wishes,
The APET/NYUAD organizers, Olivier Bochet, Nikos Nikiforakis, Ernesto Reuben. John Wooders, Myrna Wooders and; the Editors of JPET

Additional information
The mission of JPET is the publication of high quality research in public economics and related areas. Experimental work grounded in existing theory or in new theory fits into JPET’s mission. We are especially interested in papers on public good provision, including behavioral approaches, taxation and regulation in the global economy, and environmental problems.

The NYUAD campus is brand new and offers excellent accommodation as well as state of the art meeting facilities. Its students represent more than 100 nationalities, reflecting the diversity and multi-cultural orientation of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. It’s an exciting place to visit. The campus is on Saadiyat Island, a 25-minute drive from the airport, a 5-minute drive to the beach, and the city center is only a few minutes further. Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan city, with unique cultural attractions. The Grand Mosque is stunning, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi is expected to open at the end of 2017. We are planning some special events for the conference and also hope that following the conference you will take the opportunity to enjoy the local area and the mild December temperatures of around 24 degrees Celsius.
