Modeling and Simulation Methodologies, theory and practice have provided a variety of new mechanisms for advancing the studies of
different phenomena in different fields (physical, biological, social, engineering, etc.). The purpose of the Methodologies track is to
facilitate the discussion and dissemination of the most recent advancements in the area of theory and methodology of modeling and
simulation. The main focus of the modeling methodology track is on methodologies that help to develop models, as well as on the software and tools to cope with the challenges involved in modeling, including lessons learned.

Research in modeling and simulation is propelled by fostering cross fertilization between various disciplines.

The WSC 2012 Conference information, including the Author Kit, is now available at http://wintersim.org. Full compliance with the WSC formatting requirements will eliminate all unnecessary processing of your manuscript and greatly help us in respecting the tight conference schedule. Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VV&A) is key in making models
and their subsequent simulations applicable for trustworthy analyses and
decision support in defense, safety, or emergency response modeling, and a
proxy for hardware test and evaluation (T&E). This special issue is
interested in novel / emerging modeling and simulation VV&A techniques and
processes that facilitate design, development, production and deployment of
models that effectively trade for their physical counterparts in reducing
T&E cost and / or time over the lifecycle of models from individual systems
to enterprise descriptions.

Architectural descriptions via the Department of Defense Architectural
Framework are designed to inform major defense system acquisitions. While
initially focused on Command, Control, Communications, Computers,
Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, the goal of integrated
architectures, via the Joint Capability Integration and Development System
process, is to provide “best value" system performance in a timely manner.
“Best Value" has become increasingly important recently and
Architecture-based design is increasingly important to ensure the provision
of military effects with “80% solutions" and modeling and simulation is the
most cost-efficient technique to perform early design reviews. This special
issue is therefore interested in providing methods to evaluate both
component and aggregate architecture capabilities.

Modeling, simulating and prognosticating the Human Terrain of deployed
force’s areas of operation is recognized as being increasingly important for
U.S. and Coalition Forces during counter-insurgency and stability
operations. While marketing and advertising agencies have proven successes
in rapidly assessing niche populations and the ability to meet their wants
and needs, this is still a “white space" in the defense modeling /
simulation and tool building communities. This special issue is therefore
interested in contributions that forecast population response to different
messaging during the “clear / hold / build" phases of military operations.

. Modeling & Simulation in Counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED)

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is the embodiment of a strategic
policy of area denial that provides asymmetric groups with an unprecedented
force multiplier, and implied legitimacy, at minimal capital cost. While
models have been built of the respective sensors and platforms that compose
candidate IED detection and mitigation solutions, it is only now that the
modeling and simulation community is stepping up to apply their intellectual
resources to this issue in its totality. This special issue is therefore
interested in novel / emerging modeling and simulation techniques that
address the design, development and production of effective counters to IEDs
from strategic resourcing to tactical employment.

. Immersive Technologies in Support of Military Training and Education

The motivation for this special issue is based upon recognition of the fact
that the technological disruption caused first by Serious Game technology is
being extended to include the impact of Virtual Worlds both of which clearly
have a significant role to play in support of military training and
education. The body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of these
tools as experiential based learning mechanisms is beginning to grow as
creative trainers working closely with tool developers make improvements to
the technology and pedagogy associated with their use. This special edition
is intended to develop knowledge and improve understanding on how these
tools can best be described, developed and applied in support of military
training.

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of
existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For
this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator
users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms.

Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments.

A non–exhaustive list of topics of interest includes:

scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions
that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S.

On-Line Submissions and Publication

CoMetS’11 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners
to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative
applications and trends in the track research area.

Papers should contain original contributions not published or
submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures,
tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the
IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt
Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF)
and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee
members.

Accepted full papers will be included in the proceedings and
published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE
approval pending). Please note that at least one author for each
accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2011 to have the
paper published in the proceedings.

Authors may contact the organizers for expression of interests
and content appropriateness at any time. Papers can be submitted
in PDF format at the submission site

Track Description
Many systems are better represented by models with a dynamic structure/topology. Changes in system structure involve the modification of components’ interactions and the addition/removal of components.

Examples of structure variant systems include adaptive computer architectures, self-configuring sensor networks and biological systems. The ability to mimic changes in system structure into model topology provides a powerful construct to obtain simpler descriptions of reality, enabling the representation of very complex systems.

We solicit original, previously unpublished papers offering new contributions in the following (non-exhaustive) list of topics:

Emerging Applications of M&S in Industry and Academia (EAIA’11) Symposium
The Symposium for Emerging Applications of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) in
Industry and Academia (EAIA) has evolved into a hub for new ideas and
successful applications thereof. The focus is on innovative applications of
M&S in theory and practice. As such, we are looking for papers that show
successful and promising trends. For 2011, we offer seven topic categories
plus the “Other Emerging Application" category to be able to give a home to
good papers that do not fit into the other categories. For more information
on the tracks click on the hyperlinked names of the tracks.

* M&S and Education <http://scs.org/node/248> will continue to look how M&S
can be used to enrich education, ranging from public education in middle and
high schools over colleges and universities to education of the work force.
* M&S and Engineering <http://scs.org/node/249> has its focus on
engineering applications of M&S as well as applying engineering methods to
M&S. This includes new engineering management efforts, such as Scrum for
M&S, or applying M&S as a Green Technology.
* Business and Industry Simulation Applications <http://scs.org/node/253>
shows “where the rubber meets the road." Where is M&S really making a
difference in Industry? How can we optimize processes and businesses using
new methods that combine M&S and heuristics?
* M&S and Risk Management <http://scs.org/node/251> is looking for
contributions regarding theory and application of supporting Risk Management
with the full spectrum of M&S.
* M&S and Philosophy <http://scs.org/node/250> is a new topic for EAIA, but
as M&S grows as its own discipline, it is time to address some philosophical
questions, including the question of how M&S is influenced and influences
Philosophy and our understanding of what we understand.
* M&S and Law Enforcement <http://scs.org/node/252> is starting to become a
new application domain. The objective is to give a home to papers that
evaluate the potential and applicability of the whole M&S spectrum to
support law enforcement in training, analysis, and operations.
* M&S Technology Transition <http://scs.org/node/247> is a contemporary
interest to avoid the frequent loss of great ideas between R&D and
distribution organizations. We are looking for lessons learned and methods
derived to enable knowledge transfer.
* Other Emerging Applications is interested other innovative applications of
M&S in theory and practice.

appropriately expanded versions of these papers for journal publication.

The workshop on model-driven approaches for simulation
engineering (Mod4Sim) aims to combine the most recent advances
in the software engineering field with well-known and widely used
techniques for simulation engineering.

The term simulation engineering denotes the set of activities to
be carried out first to build the simulation model that
specifies the behavior of a given source system and then to
implement the simulation model into a software application that
allows to “execute" the model onto a given centralized or
distributed computer platform.

In the software engineering community, the exploitation of
principles and standards introduced in the model-driven
engineering field has obtained a significant increase of the
degree of automation provided by software development processes
and has led to software products with higher quality and
reduced costs and time-to-market.

The Mod4Sim workshop aims to investigate the use of model-
driven approaches in the simulation engineering field and
provides a unique opportunity to bring together leading
researchers and practitioners from both the software engineering
community and the simulation community in a focused workshop
environment.

A non-exhaustive list of topics of interest includes:

* model-driven simulation engineering processes
* domain specific languages for modeling and simulation
* model transformations for simulation model building
* model transformations for simulation model implementation
* model-driven engineering of distributed simulation systems
* relationship between metamodeling standards (e.g., MOF, Ecore)
and distributed simulation standards (e.g., HLA, DIS)
* metamodels for simulation reuse and interoperability
* model-driven technologies for different simulation paradigms
(discrete event simulation, multi agent simulation,
sketch-based simulation, etc.)
* model-driven methods and tools for performance engineering of
simulation systems
* simulation tools for model-driven software performance
engineering
* model-driven technologies for simulation verification and
validation
* model-driven technologies for data collection and analysis
* model-driven technologies for simulation visualization

On-Line Submissions and Publication

The Mod4Sim workshop accepts the following three types of papers:

1. Full Papers: 8 pages in final conference format.
Full papers will be published both in hard copy and CD-ROM.

2. Work in Progress Papers: papers that describe novel research
ideas and promising work that has not yet been fully
evaluated. The size of such papers is up to 6 pages in final
conference format.

3. Short Papers: Papers with industrial focus, military or
government applications. The size of such papers is up to 6
pages in final conference format.

Papers must be submitted as a PDF file through the Submission
Management System (http://www.softconf.com/scs/DEVS11).

The final version of all the papers must comply with the SCS
conference format. All the submitted papers should be original
and not have been submitted to other venues; they will be peer
reviewed with respect to their quality, originality and relevance.
The authors of the accepted paper must register in advance for
inclusion of their paper in the conference proceedings.

All papers will be included in the conference proceedings and
archived in the ACM Digital Library. Full Papers will be also
printed in hard copy.
