PhD studentships in integrated mine project evaluation
*** THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND: WH BRYAN MINING AND GEOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE
*** QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY: SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
*** THE UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA: SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTING AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE
Expressions of interest are sought for PhD studentships associated with research on integrated mining project evaluation in a risk-based framework.
The project is funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC-ORE) and the host universities listed above. Newcrest Mining Pty Ltd and the Quantitative Group Pty Ltd are the project’s industrial partners.
The aim of the project is to construct sophisticated statistical models for complex three-dimensional geometallurgical data; to devise rapid computational sampling schemes for such data; and to use the data to conduct financial evaluation of such projects based on statistical accounting analysis and real options.
These studentships offer major opportunities to engage directly with the mining industry and to contribute to a highly innovative program on resource evaluation.
PhD candidates are sought who are interested in any aspect of the project. Candidates must have the equivalent of an Australian honours degree – with at least upper second class honours – in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, finance, or some other cognisant quantitative discipline. Exposure to, or experience in, the mining industry is strongly desirable.
Positions will be based in Brisbane, Australia. Stipends will be at the usual Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate (AUD23,728 per annum in 2012), tax-free, with the usual annual increments. In addition, a tax-free top-up is available of AUD5,000 per annum. In general, there are no tuition fees for Australian nationals, Australian permanent residents, or New Zealand nationals; all other nationals will be liable for full tuition fees unless a fee-waiver can be obtained from the enrolling institution (and these are on a highly competitive basis). Full-time enrolments will be preferred.
Expressions of interest – comprising a CV and brief cover letter – should be sent to Professor Rodney Wolff (contact details below).
The Universities reserve the right not to make an appointment and to vary the above details in the formal advertisement.

Call for Papers Thurgau Experimental Economics Meeting (theem)
Institutions and Behavior
April 19-21, 2012 in Kreuzlingen (CH)
Keynote speakers: Rebecca B. Morton and Frans van Winden.
Institutions are designed in order to create incentives for people to behave in a way desired by the designer of the institution. For example, legally enforced contracts allow interacting parties to rely on each other when trust alone is not a sufficiently solid foundation. However, we frequently observe that institutions do not induce the desired behavior. People question the fairness or legitimacy of an institution, or they exploit deficits in the design of institutions in an opportunistic way. Not knowing how people respond to institutional incentives creates also a difficult problem for the designer of institutions. This conference invites contributions investigating how institutions shape behavior and vice versa how institutions are actually designed. We welcome experimental, theoretical and empirical research from economics and other related disciplines.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The 2012 International Conference on the Asia-Pacific Studies November 9-10, 2012
MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Asia-Pacific region has experienced great changes since the early 1980s, including political openness, economic regionalization, cross-border interactions, cultural exchanges, etc. These changes have made the Asia-Pacific region attractive to the world, yet, studies on the Asia-Pacific are still falling behind to other area studies. Although scholars have engaged a great deal of studies on China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, few scholars have paid attention on the studies of the Asia-Pacific as a whole. This is the key motive to initiate an international conference on the Asia-Pacific studies, which would cover interdisciplinary studies on political science, economics, sociology, history, cultural studies, etc. Comparative studies are especially welcome. This conference will focus on theories, political development, policy studies, economic regionalization, cross-border issues, and other topics related to the Asia-Pacific studies. We’re sincerely welcome professors, researchers and graduate students to submit papers to our conference. We hope that through the conference we can stimulate greater academic exchanges and brainstorming each other, thus enhancing our knowledge about this rising area.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION:
English will be the only working language in the conference, and papers must be written in English. Paper abstracts must be submitted as Word documents and contain a title of the submission, name and affiliation of the author(s), contact information (Education, Academic Experience, Full address, Telephone, and E-mail) and the appropriate field (i.e., political science, economics, international relations, regional studies, etc). If more than two authors are listed, please identify the one who will make the presentation at the conference.
