ESA-announce Replication in Economic Experiments (Research In Experimental Economics, Volume 18) Deadline Approaching
Don’t forget, the July 1 deadline for submission to Research In Experimental Economics, Volume 18 onReplication in Economic Experiments is fast approaching. The original announcement is below.
Call for papers: Research In Experimental Economics, Volume 18
Replication in Economic Experiments
Volume editors: Cary Deck, University of Arkansas
Enrique Fatas, University of East Anglia
Tanya Rosenblat, University of Michigan
This edited book is scheduled as volume 18 of the series Research in Experimental Economics, Emerald Group Publishing and is to appear in 2015. The REE series ofedited research volumes was first published in 1979 with founding editor Vernon L. Smith. The current senior editors are R. Mark Isaac and Douglas A. Norton of Florida State University.
About the new volume
Replication is a fundamental part of scientific discovery. However, there appears to be a perception in the profession that replication is often marginalized in favor of new statistically significant results. Such behavior would lead to a biased understanding of the state of knowledge in the field. At the same time, many experimental results are replicated indirectly when researchers report variations of the original design that generate similar patterns. This volume is focused on the replication of findings in the literature for which replicability has not been established
As usual, REE papers will be externally reviewed. The review criteria will include the relative importance of the original finding, the extent of existing replication (both direct and indirect) already in the literature, and the faithfulness of the replication attempt. Publication decisions will not depend on the affirmation or contradiction of the original results and a rationale for replication failures is welcome but not required. Papers should include a methods section, with a detailed description of both the original experimental protocol and the one used in the replication.
Papers that include data that are not part of a replication are welcome so long as a primary focus of the paper is replication and the additional data contribute to understanding the research questions of the original study being replicated.
Multiple replication attempts from researchers working independently are especially welcome.
Submission procedure
Interested authors are encouraged to contact the volume editors as soon as possible. For full consideration, completed manuscripts must be received by July 1, 2014. Space for inclusion in this volume is limited.

Market Microstructure and Liquidity has been created from the strong belief of the managing editors that a deep understanding of market microstructure requires academic and practitioner approaches to the topic to be brought together. This idea has been largely confirmed by the success of the biennial conference, “Market Microstructure, Confronting Many Viewpoints”, which was inaugurated in Paris in 2010.
The aim of the journal is to become the leading forum on market microstructure related issues (in a very broad sense): market design, regulation, high frequency trading, statistics of high frequency data, order books dynamics and liquidity effects at every time scale, intraday derivatives hedging and portfolio management.
One of the main goals of Market Microstructure and Liquidity is to bridge the gap between academia and industry on these topics. Hence, the editorial board of the journal consists of top academic researchers from at least five different communities (economics, financial mathematics, econometrics, statistics and econophysics), together with an industry advisory board, which consists of practitioners from some of the most important investment banks, hedge funds and exchanges, and regulators from international agencies. We believe the role of an industry advisory board is crucial in identifying the important and challenging research topics.
We encourage authors to submit their work on these topics to Market Microstructure and Liquidity. Papers can be theoretical, empirical, or both. Our goal is to provide them fair reviews without following any community standards.
To be accepted for publication, a paper should simply meet at least one of the two following criteria:
– Improve our knowledge on market microstructure significantly;
– Provide relevant and innovative new tools for market practitioners.
All submission should follow the publisher’s style and format. This information is available from the publisher website – http://www.worldscientific.com/page/mml/submission-guidelines.
We look forward to receiving submissions for Market Microstructure and Liquidity.

The USDA Economic Research Service invites proposals for a competitive grant to establish and fund a USDA Center for Behavioral and Experimental Agri-Environmental Policy Research that will use behavioral and experimental economics to conduct research on how policies and programs can influence the provision of ecosystem services from agricultural lands.
The USDA Center will facilitate new and innovative research on the application of behavioral and experimental economics theory and practice to the provision of ecosystem services from the Nation’s agricultural lands. The USDA center will be expected to (1) establish an innovative behavioral and experimental economics research program related to the design and implementation of policies and programs that provide ecosystem services; (2) broaden the network of social scientists participating in policy-relevant behavioral and experimental economics research on agricultural ecosystem services, policies, and programs; and (3) disseminate information obtained via its research program to USDA and other Federal program agencies, along with other researchers and the general public. We anticipate that up to $750,000 will be available in fiscal year 2014 (ending September 30) to support this activity over the next 3 years. Additional funds may be awarded in subsequent years, subject to availability of funds and the performance of the USDA Center.
The deadline for submission of applications is 11:59 p.m., July 7, 2014.

ESA-announce ECCS ’14 Computational Social Science: Social Contagion, Collective Behaviour, and Networks to be held in Lucca, Italy, 24-25 September 2014
CALL FOR ABSTRACT
ECCS ’14
Computational Social Science: Social Contagion, Collective Behaviour, and Networks
to be held in Lucca, Italy, 24-25 September 2014, a satellite workshop
within the ECCS’14 meeting (www.eccs14.eu)
Website: http://cssworkshop.oii.ox.ac.uk/
Important Dates:
Abstract submission deadline 22 June 2014
Conference date 24-25 September 2013
Event Overview
Technology-mediated social collectives are taking an important role in the design of social structures. Yet our understanding of the complex mechanisms governing networks and collective behaviour is still deplorably shallow. Fundamental concepts of on- and off-line networks such as power, authority, leader-follower dynamics, consensus emergence, information sharing, conflict, and collaboration are still not well defined and investigated. These are all crucial to illuminate the advantages and pitfalls of collective decision-making, which can cancel out individual mistakes, but also spiral out of control.
In recent endeavours, data from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Wikipedia, and weblogs have been shown to strongly correlate to, and even predict, elections, opinions, attitudes, movie revenues, and oscillations in the stock market, to cite few examples. Similar data provided insights into the mechanisms driving the formation of groups of interests, topical communities, and the evolution of social networks. They also have been used to study polarization phenomena in politics, diffusion of information, and the dynamics of collective attention. However, a deeper understanding of these phenomena is still very much on demand. In parallel, and even preceding the surge in interest towards social media, the area of agent-based modeling (ABM) has grown in scope, focus and capability to produce testable hypotheses, going beyond the original goal of explaining macroscopic behaviors from simple interaction rules among stylized agents.
The aim of this satellite is to address the question of ICT-mediated social phenomena emerging over multiple scales, ranging from the interactions of individuals to the emergence of self-organized global movements. We would like to gather researchers from different disciplines and methodological backgrounds to form a forum to discuss ideas, research questions, recent results, and future challenges in this emerging area of research and public interest.
